Weekend Bliss??
Hello, it's Friday. Where has the week gone? I will tell you....
Grab a hot chocolate with a little bailey's in it, or a nice glass of wine, sit back and prepare for a ride. If you aren't tired by the time this story is done, you will be a super hero and I believe you are a survivor!! This is how Rose's journey all began
Once upon a week ago, Rose went to work on a Friday morning, Dec 2nd and for whatever reason appeared not to get home until next Wednesday, Dec 7. Although she made it home in the evenings, the stay there was not very long. The fact that she was exhausted didn't seem to matter, she kept on going and going and going ... some say she's the energizer bunny. This is her story - grab your seats and hold on!
I am volunteering my photographic skills for the Calgary Youth Chorus. Wait... let me take you one step back ...
On Dec 1 I started a temporary new position working on a special project at work. This is great news for me as I enjoy project work. I think I am good at it, and I would like to pursue it. So as excited as I am, I'm feeling a bit leary. The office I am moving to is on 32nd avenue between deerfoot and barlow. I'm moving to Information Technologies... this in itself is a happy thought!! HOWEVER, here's the downer... because we don't have a single vehicle between the three of us, my commute begins like this. I wake up at 530, get ready and leave the house by 607. I get to Southland LRT station and get on the train, and I'm downtown at 650 - somedays 655. There is a shuttle that the City provides for it's workers to get to the out of downtown offices, but the first one doesn't come until 715. So I wait. I walk into the main floor public bathroom, that I used to be VERY afraid of... I have seen what goes in and comes out of it!! I fix my hair a little bit, put on a dab of mascara (spoken in my best British accent - emphasising ara). Then head to the lobby. I see my favorite security guard and talk to him some days, other days I engage in wonderful conversation with other members of IT that I haven't seen for a while. 715 rolls around and I'm out the door heading for the shuttle. I arrive at DTC at 740 and begin my day.
At 340 I prepare to leave and go out to catch the shuttle going back to City Hall. It leaves at 354 and I'm at city hall roughly 415. I can't miss this shuttle - as there is no more. :( Now that I'm downtown, I wander over to the c-train platform and wait for a somerset train I can actually get on. Finally - on the train and at southland - waiting for my connecting bus. Wow, look at me - I'm home now - it's 530! It's taken me almost 2 hours to get home!
So on the 1st it was hard to wake up as I'm usually sleeping until just before 7. Then the long commute and I'm tired when I get home. The 2nd, I do it all over again, but this is where the fun begins!
Friday December 2nd, Calgary Youth Chorus (my daughter is in it) is performing at Zoolights from 6 - 9. So after my day and my ride to City Hall, I meet up with Kim and we go and have some dinner together. We arrive at the zoo at 6. (For those who don't know, I'm volunteering my photographic skills for their non profit organization - i'm getting "exposure" ahahahha.) It's not overly cold out, I'm dressed fairly well. The chorus starts singing, and hitting up different locations throughout zoolights. We took a break to ride a carosel while they sang Yes Virginia. It was pretty cool.
We walked around some more, I took some more photos, then we went inside for a small quick break, and came out and walked around some more. By 9 PM I was starting to feel the chill. 930, i had to pee, but wow!! the zoo closed their bathrooms at 9!!! I still had almost 2 hours to go before getting home. I was slowly losing the feeling in my legs and I could feel the sides of my bladder being stretched to it's limits. At 940 I mentioned to the director that we have to go before we miss the last bus that will get us home. So 945 we are at the platform waiting to go downtown. (I'm a little shocked that not one person offered to drive us home though... disappointed).
When we got downtown I figured as I still have my work id on me, we will go into city hall and I will use the washroom there! When we got to the main doors I couldn't find a card reader to let us in! My legs are getting more and more crossed and it's becoming difficult to walk because the muscles are cramping up... i give up - there wasn't even a security guard around to get their attention!! We start walking back to the train station. Kim sees the train and starts running. I tried to run after her, but with my legs being frozen, and my bladder ready to burst, running was soon becoming an option I couldn't do. As I tried to move my legs - they screamed in stiffness, and as my foot hit the ground I felt my bladder wanting to let lose. Kim, the lovely child she is, is yelling and laughing at me... come on mom, we can get it!! hurry... !! ahahahah every time i landed my bladder was not my friend so I couldn't run anymore. We had to wait for the next train which worked out ok, as we got to southland and the bus showed up. We got home at 1100. I should have showered right away but didn't. Wanted to go straight to sleep, but my flesh and bones were soooo cold I couldn't sleep. But still, I didn't get up! Finally after 4 blankets and two hours later, I was starting to get warm.
Saturday was the beginning of the CYC camp. We were supposed to leave at at 8 am for our wonderful carless Calgary Transit journey. I woke up at 730, but Kim did not. I refuse to wake her up as this is her thing, so I laid in bed until she became alive somewhere around 9. So, after much deliberation on Calgary Transit or Checker Cab... we obt for checker cab. Kim's paying :D We get to rehearsal just around 10 and it's $26 bucks flushed away. As the day progresses, I take a few photos and then a few more. I offer, what I think is sound advice, and then shoot some more. Jess, Kim and I go to Wendy's for lunch and the weather is absolutely gorgeous. We walk over the three or four blocks, have our lunch and walk back. It's now about 130. At 3 I checked facebook, no offence, but I'm getting a tad bored... Sing Sing Sing Sing... there's only so many shots I can get of kids with their mouths open. But, I couldn't leave as we still had the Choral Festival at Knox United Church to go to after rehearsal. So I'm looking at my facebook, and someone's status says : OMG where did this snow come from?? I say in my head (or maybe outloud) what?? I jump up and head to the doors. I look out and it's a bloddy blizzard going on!! I have 20 pounds of camera gear to lug around and we are taking the bus!!! argh! my heart sinks! This is going to be a very very long night!!
Just after 5 we break for dinner with instruction to be at Knox at 615. One of the girls there offered us a ride, which we whole heartedly accepted, and the three of us - along with Jess - head to find a subway. We eat and neither of the old ones, really think about time, and next thing ya know, it's 6. Ooops!! The girls still have to change!! So we run out of Tim Hortons (I know - I said subway first, Kim and the lady who drove us - whom I have no clue as to what her name is... I'm soooo sorry - go to subway, Jess and I go to Tim Hortons right next door - the subway had no place to sit!!! Imagine that?? how lame!!! Alright, where was I - oh right, we rush out of Timmies, and jump into the car that is again covered in snow, and head to the church. We missed the parking lot turn off and being downtown and full of lovely one way roads, we had to drive three more blocks to get to the parking lot. Kim and Jess have a little fun tossing snowballs at each other while we try to cross the street (OK, yes, I had a couple got shots for the girls too heheheh and I don't mean camera... I've got a good arm hehehehe). We arrive with minutes to spare. The director is saying Hurry UP!! We have five minutes. So the girls run to the washroom and change. They performed two songs and were done. But, I'm not looking forward to the ride home at all!!!! Our bus stops running just after 9 here, so we would be cabbing it AGAIN if we didn't hurry up. Then, like an angel from heaven my friend says he will be downtown around 830. He said he would drive us home. HALLELUJAH!!!! HALLELUJAH!!! HAL A a a LUJAH! The journey is slow going and slippery, but we get home safe and sound! As I lay in bed dreaming of sleeping in til 830 I finally doze off.
Buzz Buzz - it's 830 already? I'm sooooooooo tired... where did the sleep go? I decide that no one else will be shovelling the snow outside, so I had better do it before it becomes hard packed and difficult to shovel. Wow, there is a lot of snow!!! 9 I'm done, and I go wake Kim up. We need to leave by 11 - it's Sunday, and trains and stuff will be slow, and I figured the snow would also make things slower... But, Kim is a doddler (love you lots my dear, but it's true!!). She takes forever to get ready. We have to be at rehearsal again for 1 PM. We start leaving at 1030. My neighbor is outside with her almost 90 year old dad and they are shovelling their driveway, and I ask her dad if they want help (knowing I didn't have the time but wanted to offer anyway) - he nods his head vigorously and his daughters says no, we are alright - that was my first monring hahah... I wish I could stay and help them, but we have to get that bus! (I should be careful what I wish for...) We walk half a block and watch our bus go by. ARG! We are going to be late again!!! We head back home and Kim goes in the house because I kind of gave her a mini lecture on the importance of being on time. She didn't like it. So, I make use of the new free time and head over to help shovel their driveway. 20 minutes later we are done, and I'm wearing nothing but a t-shirt - such good exercise!! I holler at Kim to get back up here and lets get a long little doggie... We get to the bus stop and within two minutes the bus is there.
You may want to get another cup of choc or another bottle of wine... i'm about half way done.
Me and my bright ideas, because I have been taking the bus ever since I was old enough to go outside, I figure I remember where the bus stop should have been! hahahah We get there and BIG SURPRISE... Kim says "mom, the 6 doesn't stop here!!" A few not so lady like words come out of my mouth, and then we start to laugh. We are in front of the bay and remembered the pot head mcdonalds makes the best fries. We would call a cab from here and we would be at rehearsal still on time. Kim makes the call and says we are at Flames Central. Get ready for this... this is pretty funny...
We go in and order our food. We find a spot by the window so we can make sure we don't miss the cab. We begin eating our lunch. I'm a terribly slow eater and Kim said the dispatcher said 10 minutes, well 10 minutes are up, and I'm watching the clock now thinking that dispatcher has a really lousy sense of time! 20 minutes later I look out the window and the light bulb above my head suddenly lights up. I look at Kim and say: Oh crap!! Kim, have you seen any traffic on 8th ave? She thinks a second and says ... no... I say OMG! The cab can't pick us up here because he can't get onto 8th avenue. We both grab whatever was left over of our food and shove it in a bag, and run out of macdonalds - onlookers may think drug deal gone bad, but it's just glee geeks late for rehearsal. We get to 1st street and frantically I look for the cab. At the lights on 7 avenue there is a cab waiting to continue up 1st... wow, that was close!! The cabbie almost drives by us... of course he would - why wouldn't he... we know what he looks like - yellow with checkers on it... but us, we are just faceless money to him. I flag him down - maybe practicing for our trip to New York in April, but it worked, he pulls over and it was our cab! He said he was driving around the block a few times. We felt pretty silly!!
Once again we arrive at the rehearsal late - but this cab ride was only $6 dollars so I paid. ahahaha I thought the cabbie was pretty cute - and those of you who know me, will know why ;)
Today's rehearsal is dance. The group learns a few new dances, and the songs sound great! I shoot some pics of them dancing and took a few videos for them. Had some baked cookies and hot apple cider.. mmm
We thought rehearsal was only until 6 and I was looking forward to going straight home to bed. Kim says to me, I want to go to chinook and buy a new winter coat. Chinook is open til 7 now and I say we might make it. But as I watch the clock it slowly passes 6 and then 610... finally 615 I say we have to go. Instead of walking to 17th avenue and catching a bus to take us downtown, Kim says "lets just walk to the c-train station - stampede one. we were on 11 ST SW and we had to walk to macleod trail. "It's a beautiful night" she says. So who am I to complain when my daughter wants to walk??? right... We start walking... we are about three or four blocks away from the stampede grounds and we both look at each other and say "my legs are freezing up". Then we laugh to the point I am almost peeing my pants. OK maybe not that bad, but it was close. We are looking at the time and thinking we aren't going to make it, we aren't going to make it, but it's a nice walk. Legs are freezing up, walking up stairs is difficult, breathing is heavy... I'm not going to make it... slowing down... but sooo close, I can do it! and.. I did. we made it! The train came right away too, so maybe it's possible we will make chinook. We get on. Train sits... we are impatient... let's go!!! Erlton, 39th Ave, finally chinook - it's 6:58... we get off always optimistic - maybe there will still be someone in the store... we get out of the c-train building... no shuttle - run... just as we cross the street someone shouts out to Kim... it's the lady with no name!! Kim says can you drive us to chinook, we laugh she says yes, and we both run into her car. Instead of stopping at the doors, she is looking for a nice place to pull over - it's 701 now... argh we are not going to make it. Inside the mall, Kim rushes up the escalator, passes her best friend who she doesn't even see... I almost passed her also.. Sorry Santana it was nothing personal... Kim's at the store, the doors are closed!!! Her heart hits the floor, I yell knock on the door! Maybe they haven't cashed out!! So Kim starts knocking... the girl opens it and says something... Kim looks disappointed. I get there and start rambling... please please... unfortunately they have cashed out already. But... she says she can put it on hold. Well now, spirits are arise! She goes to the coat area, and again, disappointment. The coat they don't have in Kim's size anymore. Bummed, depressed and hungry... We three soldiers wondering what to do. BP's!! lets go eat! That is our solution to all depression. Sad but true!
I don't have any money left so Kim pays for my supper! I love you. Thank you Kim
But the girls are having too good a time, the service was shitty!! and I'm falling asleep at the table. I want to go home. Crap! It's 9. We won't make our last bus!! Cab again... I offer to pay Kim back tomorrow just so I can get home and sleep. So Yellow and Black here we come again. Home at last, straight to bed... want to write, but can't toooo tired. 1030 I'm sleeping.
Exhaustion has taken over.
Grab a hot chocolate with a little bailey's in it, or a nice glass of wine, sit back and prepare for a ride. If you aren't tired by the time this story is done, you will be a super hero and I believe you are a survivor!! This is how Rose's journey all began
